Validate your business idea

Choose a customer, define a measurable problem and test demand before spending heavily.

Put it into practice

  1. Describe one customer group
  2. Interview prospective customers about their current solution
  3. Test a small offer and record actual responses

A small test before a big commitment

An idea is a hypothesis about a customer problem, not proof of a market. Start by identifying who experiences the problem, how often it occurs and what they do today. Ask about recent actions rather than whether someone likes your idea. Record the time, money or inconvenience involved. Then offer a small, clearly described trial with a real scope and price. A polite compliment is weaker evidence than a customer committing time or accepting a proposal. Set your test budget and decision criteria before starting. In an illustrative test, ten conversations may lead to three requests for a proposal and one paid pilot. That is a useful early signal, not proof that a large market exists. Check whether the pilot can be delivered profitably and whether the same problem appears in other customers.

Your next step

Write down one customer group, one problem, the current alternative and the smallest offer you could test. Define the result that would justify a second test, and the maximum time and money you will spend.
